LAILATUL QADR – The Night of Power

The night of Lailatul Qadar is on the Evening of 26th Ramadan, which is approx Saturday 2nd July 2016 (Evening).

Therefore 27th Ramadan will be on Sunday 3rd July 2016

The month of Ramadan enjoys a intrinsic superiority over all other months of the year. It has a night (Laylatul Qadr) better than thousand months according to the Qur’an:

“Undoubtedly, we sent it down in the blessed and valuable night. And what you know, what the blessed night is? The blessed and valuable night is better than a thousand months. Therein descend angels and ruh (the Spirit) by the command of their Lord for every affair. That is all peace till the rising of the dawn.” (Holy Quran, Surah Qadr)

Aishah (رضي الله عنه) narrated  :
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would Yujawir (stay in I’tikaf) during the last ten (nights) of Ramadan and he said: ‘Seek the Night of Al-Qadr during the last ten (nights) of Ramadan.’”
(Jami`at-Tirmidhi, Book 8, Hadith 111, – Grade: Sahih)

About the reason of revelation of this verse, it has been narrated by our Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) that one day he talked to his Companions about a person of a past nation and informed them that he spent a thousand months praying the whole night and doing Jihad all day. So his companions felt very sorry that due to their short life they cannot get that status. Then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala revealed this verse (Surah) and informed Muslims that though you have not been given long lives yet by praying on the Night of Power you can get the rewards more than a person praying one thousand months.

The Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) also described several times the significant values of this night: Hazrat Anas bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said that this month (Ramadaan) has approached to you, a night of this month is better than thousand months. One who failed to get the blessings of this is failed to get any blessings. And no one is failed but he who is truly disappointed.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala promissed forgiveness to the praying persons in this blessed night: Abu Huraira (radi Allahu anhu) reported that our Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said that one who prays in this night with Imaan and with the intention of getting blessings will be forgiven. Anas bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) reported that our Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said that at the Night of Power, Jibrael (alaihis salaam) came down with a group of angels and prayed for mercy for the bondsman who is engaged in the worship of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala sitting or standing.

How to find out Laylatul Qadr:

It is narrated by Hazrat Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said:

“Seek the Night of Power in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan”.

This Hadith shows that the Night of Power falls on one of the odd nights of last ten days that is 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th night. But we have some other indications from the companions of the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and Muhaddhiseen, that this should be the night of 27th of Ramadaan. Due to this it seems a general consensus among the Islamic Scholars towards the 27th night.

However, it is better to keep vigil during all odd nights of last ten days to get the blessings of this precious night. The Du’a to be read during this night is “Allahumma innaka afuwuh tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anni”. This Du’as was taught to Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa (radi Allahu anha) by Huzoor (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) himself.

Introduction of Hazrata Bibi Ayesha Siddiqa (R.A)

Sayyidah Ayesha Siddiqah Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha was the third lady to enter the house of the Beloved Habeeb Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him as his wife, and she was the only virgin in the consorts of purity of the Holy Prophet’s Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him house. She was of a tender age when she was married to Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him.

Historical records bear ample testimony to the fact that Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha was a precocious genius and was developing both in mind and body with rapidity peculiar to such rare personalities. This marriage is significant in the history of Islam in so many aspects.
 

Firstly, it cemented the ties between Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and his devoted friend Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha who always stood by him in hour of trial and who sacrificed his all for the cause of Islam.

Secondly, by this marriage, a lady of eminent qualities came under the direct influence of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him at a highly impressionable age, and this provided her ample opportunities to penetrate into the innermost recesses of the sacred heart of the Beloved Habeeb Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. She shared his company and thus was able to develop her potentialities and refine her taste perfectly in accordance with the teachings of Islam under the direct supervision of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him.

This young age was in fact very opportune for marriage as it has been clearly shown in the researches of psychoanalysts that much of the emotional of a mature person and most of those seemingly unaccountable leanings, tastes and tendencies comprised in the term idiosyncrasies can be traced to the experience of his or her highly formative age of either later childhood or early adolescence.
 

Thirdly, all the wives of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him with the exception of Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha were of advanced age and thus could neither share the feelings of the younger generation nor could they properly appreciate their point of view. The difference of age always stood as a barrier between them and the ladies of the younger ages. The only lady with whom young women could frankly enter into conversation and discuss problems without any reserve could be none but Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha. Thus, the marriage of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him with Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha at an age when she was at the threshold of puberty was a great necessity, as it was through her that instructions could successfully be imparted to the young ladies who had newly entered the fold of Islam.

Moreover, this marriage struck at the root of a wrong notion that had firmly taken hold of the minds of the people that it was contrary to religious ethics to marry the daughter of a man whom one declared to be one’s brother. The Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, with the help of his personal example, showed to the people that there is a great difference between a brother-in-faith and the brother in relation to blood. The marriage, which is forbidden in Islam, is with the daughter of the brother in blood and not with the daughter of the brother-in-faith.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha lived on almost fifty years after the passing away of the Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. She passed away in the year 58 A.H. in the month of Ramadaan and was buried in the sacred graveyard Baqi al-Garqad of Madinatul Munawwara.
 

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha reported that the Apostle of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said:

 

“I saw you in a dream for three nights when an Angel brought you to me in a silk cloth and he said, ‘Here is your wife’, and when I removed the cloth from your face, it was yourself, so I said, ‘If this is from Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala, let Him carry it out.’”
 

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha used to play with dolls in the presence of the Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and when her playmates came to her they left (the house) because they felt shy of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him whereas Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him sent them to her. People sent their gifts when it was the turn of Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him .

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha said:

“The wives of Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him sent his daughter Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha to him. She sought permission to get in as he had been lying with me in my mantle. He gave her permission and she said: ‘Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him ! Verily, your wives have sent me to you in order to ask you to observe equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafah.’ She (Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ) said: ‘I kept quiet’. Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said to her (Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ):

 

‘O daughter! Don’t you love whom I love?’ She said: ‘Yes, I do’. Thereupon, he said: ‘I love this one (Ayesha)’.
 

“Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha then stood up as she heard this from her father and went to the wives of Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and informed them of what she had said to him and what he had said to her. Thereupon, they said to her: ‘We think that you have been of no avail to us. You may again go to Allah’s Apostle and tell him that his wives seek equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafah’. Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha said: ‘By Allah I will never talk to him about this matter’.

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha (further) reported:

 

The wives of Allah’s Apostle Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him then sent Zaynab bint Jahsh Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha , the wife of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him , and she was one who was somewhat equal in rank with me in the eyes of the Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and I have never seen a woman more advanced in religious piety than Zaynab Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha , more Allah-conscious, more truthful, more alive to the ties of blood, more generous and having more sense of self-sacrifice in practical life and having more charitable disposition and thus more close to Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala, the Exalted, than her. She however lost temper very soon but was soon calm. Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him permitted her to enter as she (Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ) was along with Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him in her mantle, in the same very state when Faatima Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha had entered. She said: ‘Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him , your wives have sent me to you seeking equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafah’. She then came to me and showed harshness to me and I was seeing the eyes of Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him whether he would permit me. Zaynab Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha went on until I came to know that Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him would not disapprove if I retorted. Then I exchanged hot words until I made her quiet. Thereupon, the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him smiled and said: ‘She is the daughter of Abu Bakr Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ’”.
 

This Hadith gives a clear glimpse of the home life of the Glorious Messenger of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. The wives of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him were all eminent ladies having deep Allah-consciousness, but they, after all, belonged to the human race and thus, could not completely banish those minor human weaknesses, which are ingrained in the very nature of the fair sex. They were all deeply attached to the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and every one of them had, therefore, an earnest desire that she should get the maximum love and affection from the Prophet of Allah Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. It was out of this spirit of envy, rather than jealousy, that they put forward this demand. It was a natural expression of their humanly feelings born of their love for the Beloved Habeeb Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him , and not an objection against the attitude and behavior of the “Mercy of the Worlds”. And they could not even conceive of it; and how could they, when all of them had been receiving the most beneficent treatment at his hand?

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha reported:

 

“When the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him set out on a journey, he used to cast lots amongst his wives. Once this lot came out in my favour and that of Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha. They (Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha and Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ) both went along with him and when it was night Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him used to travel on camel along with Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha and talked with her. Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha said to Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha : ‘Would you like to ride upon my camel tonight and allow me to ride upon your camel and you would see (what you generally do not see) and I would see (what I do not see) generally?’ She said: ‘Yes’. But, Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha rode upon the camel of Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha and Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha rode upon the camel of Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha and Allah’s Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him came near the camel of Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha , (whereas) Hafsa Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha had been riding over that. He greeted her and then rode with her until they came down. She (Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ) thus missed the company of the Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him and when they sat down, Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha felt jealous. She put her foot in the grass and said: ‘O ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala , let the scorpion sting me or a serpent bite me. And so far as Your Messenger Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him is concerned, I cannot say anything about him’”.
 

Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha has said:

 

“The Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said that the excellence of Ayesha over women is like the excellence of Tharid over all other foods.”
 

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha is one of the four persons (the others being Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha , Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Omar Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha and Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha ) who transmitted more than two thousand sayings of the Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. The Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him referring to her extensive knowledge of Islam is reported to have said:

 

“Learn a portion of your religion from this Humayra (red coloured lady).”
 

Sayyidah Ayesha Radi ALLAHu Ta’ala Anha not only possessed great knowledge but also took an active part in education and social reform. As a teacher she had a clear and persuasive manner of speech and her power of oratory has been described in superlative terms. Men and women came from far and wide to benefit from her knowledge.

According to the Orientalist, D.S. Margoliouth, he wrote:

 

“Of the entire number of inmates, Lady Ayesha alone, by force of character and keenness of wit, won for herself a place in the political and religious history of Islam.” [Quoted by Fida Hussain Maalik in his book, ‘Wives of the Prophet’, Bombay, 1989, Page 124]

ELECTIONS

After Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) passed away, Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) was elected as the fourth Caliph by the Muslims. During the period of the first three Caliphs, Madinatul Munawwarah continued to be the capital of the Muslim world, but Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) transferred the Islamic capital to Kufah in Iraq.

EARLY LIFE

Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)was the son of Abu Taalib, an uncle of Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)was married to Sayyadah Bibi Fathima (radi Allahu anha), the daughter of Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). They had 3 sons, Sayyiduna Hassan, Sayyiduna Hussain and Sayyiduna Mohsin (radi Allahu anhumul ajma’in).Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)took part in the battle of Badr, Khandaq and Khaibar. At Khaibar, it was Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)who subdued the Jews with his furious assault. He also held many important positions during the time of Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and the first 3 Caliphs before him.

He had a love for learning and was a great and learned person himself. He had been given the title of “Baabul I’lm” or “Gate of Learning” by Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). He was also called “Asaadullah” or “Lion of Allah.”

OPPOSITION

The situation in Madinatul Munawwarah after the murder (Shahaadah) of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was serious. Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu’s) first task was to rid Madinatul Munawwarah of the rebels and to return the situation to normal.

Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)was able to force the rebels to withdraw from Madinatul Munawwarah and to establish peace and order in the city. The powerful governor of Syria, Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (radi Allahu anhu), challenged Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)and refused to pay homage to him. Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (radi Allahu anhu) insisted that Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)arrest the murderers of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) and hand them over to him.

Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)was a man with a deep sense of justice and did not want to accuse the wrong people. He needed a peaceful period to trace the culprits. But, Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (radi Allahu anhu) began accusing him of protecting the murderers, and in this way the old enmity between the two families were revived.

SAYYIDUNA MU’AWIYAH (RADI ALLAHU ANHU)

Unlike most of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu’s) governors, Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) displayed great administrative ability and was very popular. He was a God-fearing man and especially known for his mercy. Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)was very strict in piety and straight forward. Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) declared his disobedience to him, because he felt that he was better qualified to lead the Muslim world.

BATTLE OF THE CAMEL

Another serious development took place. Sayyadah Aishah (radi Allahu anha) and two leading Sahaba, Sayyiduna Talha and Sayyiduna Zubair (radi Allahu anhuma) declared their opposition to the Khilaafat of Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu). They left Madinatul Munawwarah for Makkatul Mukarramah and from there travelled to Basrah where they rallied men and new supporters.

Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)had to crush all opposition. A bloody battle took place near Basrah on the 9th of December 656 A.C. This battle was sparked off by a third force who were the real troublemakers. Just before the battle, both parties had already reached an agreement to settle the dispute. But this third force, the real assassinators of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), launched an overnight attack on both camps simultaneously. Each side were under the impression that the other had attacked. The battle began. Several thousand men were lost including the two Sahaba. Sayyadah Aishah (radi Allahu anha) was safe. She was riding a camel during the battle-hence the name “Battle of the Camel.” Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)treated her in a most noble and dignified manner and respectfully sent her back to Madinatul Munawwarah. She praised him and deeply regretted opposing Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu). Kufa was now made the capital of the Islamic world.

BATTLE OF SIFFIN

Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) rallied an army to face Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu). A battle took place at Siffin on the Syrian border in the July of 567 A.C. Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) was no match for Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)and began to retreat. By the clever proposal of Sayyiduna Amr bin Al As (radi Allahu anhu), the retreating army raised pieces of the Holy Quran on their spears demanding judgement between the two parties. Many pious Muslims on the side of Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)refused to fight seeing the Holy Quran displayed in the air.

JUDGEMENT

Two men, one from each side, were appointed to settle the dispute. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (radi Allahu anhu), a pious Sahaba from Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu’s) side, and the skilled Sayyiduna Amr (radi Allahu anhu) from Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhu’s) side. Sayyiduna Musa (radi Allahu anhu) declared in front of the Muslims that it was decided to recommend the removal of both Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhuma) and that the Muslims should select another man for the Khilaafat. Sayyiduna Amr (radi Allahu anhu) replied that: “He has declared the removal of his leader, while I would conform Muaawiyah as the Caliph.” Chaos followed.

KHAARIJEES

Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)prepared to meet Sayyiduna Muaawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) again in battle, but he was moved from his task by a serious conflict that occurred among his men. Some narrow-minded people accused Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)of accepting a man-made judgement. Their slogan was: “There is no judgment but with Allah.” They declared that Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Muaawiyah and Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhumul ajma’in) were unbelievers and that Jihad should be declared against them. Ever since this event, they have been known as the “Khaarijees”, which means, “those who left the fold.” They maintained that the Khilaafat should be given to the most eligible Muslim, regardless of his origin. The Kharijees are not regarded as Muslims.

ASSASSINATION

On the 17th of July 659 A.C., Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)overcame the Khaarijees in a battle near Nahrawan, in which, it is said, that 40 000 lives were lost.

In the early morning of the 24th of January 661 A.C., Abdul Rahman bin Muljim, a Khaariji fanatic lay in ambush in the Masjid of Kufah and stabbed Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)when he entered the musjid. He passed away from the wound. He was 63 years old.

PERSONAL LIFE

Sayyiduna Ali (Karam Allah Wajhu)lived a simple life. He refused any luxury food and wore simple clothes thinking of the poor. He should sleep on the ground and even sit on the floor. He repaired his own clothes and shoes and even did manual labour. He spent nights in Salaah and should fast for three days in a row. Honesty, piety, justice and love of truth were the main marks of his character.

** Who was Hazrath (His Eminence) Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) ??? ***

Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib ; 13th Rajab, 22 or 16 BH – 21st Ramaḍān, 40 AH; was the cousin and son-in-law of prophet Muhammad (PBUT), ruling over the Islamic Caliphate from 656 to 661. A son of Abu Talib, Hazrath Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) was also the first male convert to Islam. Sufis consider Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) the fourth and final of the Rashidun (rightly guided Caliphs).

His father was Abu Talib and his mother was Fatima bint Asad, but he was raised in the household of Prophet Muhammad (PBUT), who themselves were raised by Abu Talib, Muhammad’s (PBUT) uncle, and Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu)’s father. When prophet Muhammad (PBUT) reported receiving a divine revelation, Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) was the first male to accept his message, dedicating his life to the cause of Islam.

Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) migrated to Medina shortly after Prophet Muhammad (PBUT) did. Once there Prophet Muhammad (PBUT) told Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) that God had ordered him to give his daughter, Fatimah, to Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) in marriage.
Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) was appointed Caliph by the Companions (the Sahaba) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUT) in Medina after the assassination of the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan.

He encountered defiance and civil war during his reign.
n 661, Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) was attacked one morning while praying in the mosque of Kufa, and died a few days later.
In Muslim culture, Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) is respected for his courage, knowledge, belief, honesty, unbending devotion to Islam, deep loyalty to Prophet Muhammad (PBUT), equal treatment of all Muslims and generosity in forgiving his defeated enemies, and therefore is central to mystical traditions in Islam such as Sufism.

Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) retains his stature as an authority on Quranic exegesis, Islamic jurisprudence and religious thought. Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu) holds a high position in almost all Sufi orders which trace their lineage through him to Prophet Muhammad (PBUT). Hazrat Ali (Karam Allah-Wajhu)’s influence has been important throughout Islamic history.

A long time ago there was a young boy named Bayazid Bustami. He was born in Persia, an ancient land of plains, mountains and poetry.

Being the only son of a poor, widowed mother, he was the light of her eyes and she rested all her hopes for the future on him. She dedicated her life to giving him the best she could, but because she was poor, she couldn’t afford much.

As the small boy grew older, she scraped together what money she could and sent him to the local school where he could learn to read and write. While he was there, he would study the Qur’an, Shar’iah, math, Arabic and poetry. He turned out to be an excellent student and he learned quickly.

One day, while he was reading the Qur’an he came across an ayah in which Allah said, “Be thankful to Me and be thankful to your parents.”

Hazrat Bayazid read this ayah a second time and then thought about what it meant. He closed the book and immediately ran back to his mother.

Now because he came home early from school, his mother became worried. She asked him, “What’s wrong, my son? Did you run away from school? Is there something that happened?”

“No, mother,” Hazrat Bayazid answered. “I read an ayah from the Holy Qur’an today that said we have to be thankful to Allah and to our parents. This made me a little worried. I’m not real strong so how can I serve two masters? Mother, either keep me in your service or give me up in the service of Allah.”

His mother paused for a second and smiled. Then she immediately grasped his hands in hers and said, “My son, I dedicate you to the service of Allah. To me, if you serve Allah you’re serving me, too.”

Hazrat Bayazid smiled and returned to school with a new heart for his studies and a new attitude. Everyone noticed the change in him, and his teachers marveled over how he seemed to pour himself into his studies from that day forward.

He began to come to school early to read and left long after all the other students had gone. When his teacher asked him what happened, why he had become so motivated to study and learn, Hazrat Bayazid explained how his mother had released him to serve only Allah. The teacher smiled and hugged the boy firmly.

In time, after he had become a young man, Hazrat Bayazid went out on the road in search of more advanced learning. He traveled all over the Muslim world and attended different colleges and studied with different teachers. He earned many degrees along the way.

After a few more years he settled in the city of Baghdad, which at that time, was the most important city in the Muslim world.

He taught in a small school and went to college at night and never left his desire to master everything he could to be a truly thankful servant of Allah.

One late night he was on his way home when he encountered a rowdy band of drunks on the street. One of them had a guitar and was playing it in a sloppy, annoying way. Hazrat Bayazid wanted to avoid them but they were harassing everyone who passed by. As Hazrat Bayazid walked by them, the leader of the bunch started insulting him in a very nasty way, calling him names and taunting him.

Hazrat Bayazid told the man to stop his foolish talk but this made the drunken man even more angry.

The drunk picked up his guitar, lifted it high over his head and then brought it down, smashing it over Hazrat Bayazid’s head. The guitar shattered into a dozen pieces and blood streamed down Hazrat Bayazid’s blessed forehead. The rest of the drunks paused for a minute and then started yelling and laughing again.

Hazrat Bayazid didn’t say a word and went home in silence, wiping the blood off his head with a handkerchief.

The next day, Hazrat Bayazid gave a basket of candy and a few dollars to his servant and directed him to go to the leader of the drunks and tell him the following words:

“Last night my head was responsible for breaking your guitar. Please buy a new one with this money. And also I found that your tongue was very sour last night. Please remove the sourness of your tongue by eating these sweet candies.”

When the drunken man received the gifts, he was so filled with shame and repentance that he brought his entire rowdy group to Bayazid and begged for forgiveness. He gave up drinking and became a righteous Muslim from that moment onward.

After a few more years in Baghdad, Hazrat Bayazid again took to the road and travelled in many lands where the people were not yet Muslims. He traveled all over India and brought thousands of people to Islam. News of his spiritual insight and wisdom reached far and wide.

Years passed and when he was a middle-aged man, Hazrat Bayazid received a note from his first teacher, his teacher from the school when he was a boy. It said, “Come to me.”

So Hazrat Bayazid immediately sold everything he had in India and began the long journey back home to Persia. Along the way, huge crowds of people gathered in every town and village he passed through. Everyone wanted to get a glimpse of the famous scholar they had heard so much about.
Then, after a month of traveling, Hazrat Bayazid finally reached the small village school where he had first learned to love knowledge.

His teacher, who was very old by now, told Hazrat Bayazid to sit down in front of him. He paused a moment and then he said, “Hazrat Bayazid, you have fulfilled your promise to Allah. Now go and serve your mother.”

When he heard his mother being mentioned, a rush of feelings overwhelmed his heart and he was filled with an unstoppable desire to see her again.

But he knew a huge crowd was gathering in the center of town in anticipation of seeing him, put on a dark robe with a hood and waited until night had fallen. Then he snuck out of the teacher’s house through a back door and made his way to his mother’s cottage.

Before he could knock on the door, he heard her praying inside. She was saying, “Merciful Allah. I have dedicated my son to your path. It is for You to love him and for You to take care of him.”

Hazrat Bayazid couldn’t hold his sorrow in a moment longer. He burst out in uncontrollable tears and sobbing.

His mother heard someone crying outside the door and she called out, “Have you come back, my son?”

Hazrat Bayazid replied in a choked voice, “Yes, mother, I have returned. Please, open the door and see your son again.”

The door was opened after a moment and Hazrat Bayazid threw himself at his mother’s feet and cried. She carefully bent down and pulled him up while passing her hands over his head and face. She then said, “I’ve wished for nothing more than to see your face again, my son, but, alas, you have come too late. For I can see no more

His mother had become blind. She would never again be able to look upon the face of her long lost son, the one she gave to Allah so many years before. From that moment forward, Hazrat Bayazid vowed to be thankful to his mother for the rest of his life and for as long as she lived, he never left her side.

When Bayazid died, he was over seventy years old. Before he died, someone asked him his age. He said: I am four years old. For seventy years I was veiled. I got rid of my veils only four years ago.”

He died in 874CE and is buried either in the city of Bistam in north central Iran, or in Semnan, Iran. Bayazid lived a century before Abul Hassan Kharaqani. Attar Neishapouri has mentioned in his book Tazkiratul Awliya that Bayazid had spoken about the personality and state of Shaikh Abul Hassan Kharaqani with his disciples while passing from the village of Kharaqan, almost 100 years before the birth of Shaikh Abul Hassan.

The story of a section of Jews accepting Islam:

One day Hadhrat Bayazid Bastami rahmatullah alayhi while in meditation, saw himself in a synagogue dressed as a Jew. At first he was confused, but when he kept on seeing the same vision over and over again, he decided to enact it. So, he dressed himself as a Jew and went to their synagogue.

When the Jews and their scholars were present, their chief Rabbi stood up to speak. But when he stood up, his tongue became stuck and he could not talk. After he had been standing quietly for some time, the Jews started to complain. The Rabbi said, “In this gathering there is a follower of the Prophet Muhammed (sallalahu alayhi wassalam) and I cannot speak because he has come to examine us.”

On hearing this, their anger raged like wildfire and they asked the Rabbi to give them permission to kill this follower of the Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu alayhi wassalam). The Rabbi replied, “He cannot be killed without proof, so we must talk to him peacefully and respectfully and then we can decide.”

The Rabbi then said, “Oh follower of Muhammad (sallalahu alayhi wassalam). For the sake of your Prophet please stand up in your place. If you can remove our doubt about Islam then we shall accept Islam, but if you can’t, then we shall kill you.” On hearing this, Hadhrat Bayazid rahmatullah alayhi stood up and gave permission for them to question him.

Rabbi: What is one and not two?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Allah.

Rabbi: What is two and not three?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Night and day.
[Qur’aan chapter 17 verse 12:
“And we made night and day two examples.”]

Rabbi: What is three and not four?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The Throne, Chair, and the Pen of Allah.

Rabbi: What is four and not five?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The Torah, Bible, Psalms, and the Qur’aan.

Rabbi: What is five and not six?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The five compulsory Prayers.

Rabbi: What is six and not seven?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The six days in which the Earth, the sky, and whatever is in between them was created.
[Qur’aan chapter 50 verse 38:
“And we created the Sky and the Earth and whatever is between them in six days”]

Rabbi: What is seven and not eight?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The seven skies.
[Qur’aan chapter 67 verse 3,
“Who created the seven skies layer upon layer!”]

Rabbi: What is eight and not nine?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The bearers of the throne of Allah.
[Quraan chapter 69 verse 17:
“And they will lift their Lord’s throne on themselves on that day, eight persons. “]

Rabbi: What is nine and not ten?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The villagers of Hadhrat Salih peace be upon him in which the mischief mongers lived.
[Qur’aan chapter 27 Verse 48:
“And in that city there were nine persons who created mischief on the Earth, and they didn’t amend. “]

Rabbi: What is ten and not eleven?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The person who performs a minor pilgrimage along with the major one and doesn’t have the capacity to sacrifice an animal, he has to keep ten fasts.
[Qur’aan chapter 2 verse 196:
“So keep the three Haj days and seven fasts when you return”.]

Rabbi: What is eleven, twelve and thirteen things which Allah has mentioned?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Hadhrat Yusuf had eleven brothers.
The twelve months in a yea.,
[Qur’aan chapter 9 verse 36:
“The number of months, with Allah , is twelve months”.]
Hadhrat Yusuf saw thirteen things prostrating to him.
[Qur’aan chapter 12 verse 4:

“I saw in a dream eleven stars, the sun and the moon, I saw them (for my sake) prostrating (to me)”.]
Rabbi: Which is that nation which lied and went in to paradise and which is that nation which said the truth and entered hell?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Hadhrat Yusuf’s brothers lied but they went to paradise.
[Qur’aan chapter 12 verse 17:
“Oh father! We went out to run and we left Yusuf with our belongings, then he was eaten by the wolf.”]
The contradiction between the Christians and the Jews was true but they went to hell.
[Qur’aan chapter 2 verse 113:
“And the Jews said that the Christians are not on any path, and the Christians said that the Jews are not on any path, even though they all read the book.”]
Rabbi: What is the meaning of
Qur’aan chapter 51 verse 1-4:
By the ships that scatter broadcast; And those that lift and bear away heavy weights; And those that flow with ease and gentleness;
And those that distribute and apportion by Command?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The meaning of flying scattered ships is air, the meaning of weight carrying ships is water filled clouds, the meaning of calmly sailing ships is boats, and the meaning of the last is the angels which distribute the sustenance.
Rabbi: What is that thing which has no soul nor any connection with breathing, yet it breathes?
Hadhrat Bayazid: It is the dawn, for it has no soul but it still breathes.
[Qur’aan Chapter 81 verse 18:
“And the morning, when it breathes.”]
Rabbi: What are those fourteen things to which Allah talks with honour?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The seven earths and the seven skies,
[Qur’aan chapter 41 verse 11:
Then He said to it and to the Earth, come both of you with happiness or hardly, They said we will come happily.]
Rabbi: Which is that grave which moves the person in it around?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The fish of Hadhrat Yunus alayhi salaam.
[Qur’aan chapter 37 verse 142:
“Then the fish took him as a morsel”.]

Rabbi: Which is that water which neither came up from the earth nor down from the sky?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The water which Hadhrat Sulaiman alayhi salaam sent to Bilqis, Queen of Sheeba, for it was the sweat of a horse.

Rabbi: What are those four things which had no father nor were born from a mother’s stomach?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The sheep of Hadhrat Ismail, the she camel of Hadhrat Salih, Hadhrat Adam and our mother Eve alayhi salaam.

Rabbi: Whose blood flowed first on the Earth?
Hadhrat Bayazid: It was Habil’s (Abel) when Qabil (Cain) killed him.

Rabbi: What is that thing which Allah created and then bought?
Hadhrat Bayazid: A believers soul.
[Qur’aan chapter 9 verse 11:
“Allah bought from the Muslim’s their souls.”]

Rabbi: What is that voice which Allah created and then spoke ill of?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The donkey’s voice.
[Qur’aan chapter 31 verse 19:
“Without doubt the worse voice is of a donkey.”]

Rabbi: What is that creation that Allah created and from it’s greatness created fear?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Women’s scheming.
[Qur’aan chapter 12 verse 28:
“Truly, mighty is your scheming.”

Rabbi: What is that thing that Allah created and then asked about?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The staff of Hadhrat Musa.
[Qur’aan Chapter 20 verse 17:
“And what is that in your right hand, Oh Musa? He said “This is my staff.”]

Rabbi: Who are the most pious of the women and what are the blessed rivers?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The most pious women are Hadhrat Eve, Hadhrat Khadija, Hazart Aisha and Hadhrat Fatima.
The most blessed rivers are the Oxus, Simwon, Tigris, Euphrates and Nile .

Rabbi: Which is the most blessed mountain and the most blessed animal?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Mount Toor in Makkah and the horse.

Rabbi: Which is the best of all months and the best of all nights?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The month of Ramdhan and the Night of Power.
[Qur’aan Chapter 2 verse 185:
“The month of Ramdhan in which the Qur’aan was revealed.”
Qur’aan chapter 97 verse 3:
“The night of power is better than a thousand months.”]

Rabbi: There is a tree which has twelve twigs, each twig has thirty leaves, and each leaf has five fruits, two in the sun and three in the shade. What is the meaning of this tree?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The tree means one year, the twigs mean the twelve months, the leaves represent the thirty days, and the fruits are the daily prayers, two of which are prayed in the day and the remaining three which are prayed at dawn, at dusk, and in the night time.

Rabbi: What is that thing that circled around the Ka’abah in Makkah even though it had no soul?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The boat of Hadhrat Nuh alayhi salaam. In the time of the flood it arrived in Arabia and circled around the Ka’abah.

Rabbi: How many prophets did Allah send as Messengers?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Only Allah knows, but in narrations it is said that Allah created 126,000 prophets from which 313 were Messengers.

Rabbi: What are those four things whose roots are one but their colours and tastes are different?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
The wetness of the eye are sour, the wetness of the ears is acid, that of the noses is also acid and the wetness of the mouth is sweet.

Rabbi: What is the voice of the donkey called?
Hadhrat Bayazid: It is the curse on the tax takers.

Rabbi: What is the voice of the dog called?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Doom on the dwellers of Hell by the anger of Allah.

Rabbi: What is the remembrance of the ox?
Hadhrat Bayazid: SubhanAllah wa bihamdihi, subhanAllah il adheem.

Rabbi: What is the remembrance of the camel?
Hadhrat Bayazid: HasbunAllahu wa ni’mal wakeel.

Rabbi: What is the remembrance of the peacock?
Hadhrat Bayazid: Huwal wadud, dhul ‘arsh il-adheem.

Rabbi: What is the beautiful recitation of the nightingale?
Hadhrat Bayazid: So remember the pure Allah when it is morning and evening.

Rabbi: What is that thing which Allah sent revelation on, but it was not human, Jinn or Angel?
Hadhrat Bayazid: The honey bee.
[Qur’aan chapter 16 verse 68:
“And your lord gave order to the honey bee.”]

After this the Rabbi couldn’t ask any more questions and became quiet. Hadhrat Bayazid rahmatullah alayhi said, “Now you give me the answer to my one question. What is the key to paradise?” The Rabbi replied, “If I give the answer to this question, this gathering will kill me.”
The gathering shouted in one voice “We shall not do anything. Now tell us the true answer!”

The Rabbi then said, “Listen! the key to paradise is:

There is no God worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad peace be upon him is His Messenger!”

On hearing this the whole gathering accepted Islam and Hadhrat Bayazid rahmatullah alayhi returned giving thanks to Allah.
